Tired of always wearing pants to cover
up those spider veins that your mother gave you? Come in and see Brenda
Ray, R.N. to get rid of those veins,
and feel comfortable in shorts and skirts again. Southlake Plastic
Surgery uses one of the oldest and most reliable techniques to treat
spider veins.
Over time, 80% of women develop spider
veins. Pregnancy, prolonged standing and heredity are the main causes.
As we age, those veins can become larger, darker and painful. They
appear most frequently on the legs but also can appear on the face.
FAQ
What
is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy was developed over 75 years ago and, today, is one of
the most common treatments for spider veins. A sclerosing solution
is injected into the vein through a tiny needle. The body then begins
the process of healing, and the vein decomposes, shrinks and disappears.
The procedure lasts on average 30-60 minutes, depending on how many
veins are present. After treatment, support hose are applied and
worn for a full week. You are encouraged to wear the support hose
for an additional 1 weeks afterwards whenever you are on your feet.
The support keeps the veins closed and compressed so that the solution
can work more effectively. Brenda suggests Futuro Compression Hose "Firm Support" 20-30 mmHg (Kroger, CVS, Walgreens).
Who is a candidate?
A thorough history is taken to determine if you are a candidate. You
may not receive sclerotherapy if you have any of the following
conditions: pregnancy, insulin dependent diabetes, crippling arthritis,
severe bronchial asthma, lupus, blood clots or receiving anti-coagulant
therapy.
What results will
I see?
Gradual improvement will be noticed. Injection sites are visible for
several weeks and may appear like a bug bite. Treatment is recommended
in the fall or winter because of the appearance of the injection sites,
and summer may be too hot to wear the support hose. During the consultation,
you will be advised as to the number of treatments necessary to achieve
desired results. The average is 2-6 sessions 3 weeks apart, but most
see significant results in 2 treatments.
What are the side
effects?
In most cases you can resume regular activities immediately. Vigorous
activity or excessive standing is not advised for 48 hours. Following
treatment, the veins may darken, and the area may appear bruised. Support
hose after treatment is recommended. This application of pressure will
help reduce side effects and aid in more effective healing and treatment.
After the treatment of larger vessels, the affected area may appear
pigmented, but this is temporary and will fade over time. Hyperpigmentation
is a common side effect with many of the techniques used to treat spider
veins. Brenda Ray personalizes the solution used after a thorough medical
history to decrease or eliminate the chance of pigmentation with her
treatments.
