When a woman’s breast loses shape and firmness, a breast lift (also know as mastopexy) can enhance a woman’s appearance and helps to maintain a more youthful shape and profile. There are several factors that cause the breasts to sag including pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight gain or loss, aging, gravity, and heredity. The breast lift raises and firms the breast tissue by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support eh new breast contour. The ideal candidates for a breast lift are women who have completed having children and breastfeeding and are at or close to their ideal weight.
Procedure
During a breast lift, incisions are typically made around the areola and vertically down from the areola to the crease under the breast. The underlying breast tissue is then lifted and reshaped to improve breast contour and firmness. The nipple and areola may be repositioned to a more natural and youthful height and excess skin is removed to compensate for any loss of elasticity. A breast lift will not increase the fullness or size of the breast. Occasionally, a breast augmentation procedure may be done simultaneously or later to increase breast size and fullness at the top of the breast.
Recovery
Scars from the incisions will fade and significantly improve over time; however, the final amount of scar healing depends on each individual and their healing process. Prescription painkillers and muscle relaxants may be prescribed to relieve discomfort and soreness for the first few days after surgery. Complete recovery takes up to six weeks depending on your activity level. Most patients return to normal daily activities within a week to ten days.
