As we begin to age, our faces begin to
look tired and reveal wrinkles that cannot be reversed by skincare.
The aging process due to the effects of gravity, sun exposure, and
stress causes wrinkles around the eyes, the mid-face, jawline and neck. A facelift
(technically called a rhytidectomy or meloplasty) is one of the most frequently performed plastic surgery procedures of the face, and can improve most visible signs
of aging. The ideal candidates for facelifts are typically in their
mid-40’s to 60’s who are not getting desired results from
non-surgical procedures. A facelift can make you look younger and well-rested,
but it will not change your overall appearance.
Procedure
The results of a facelift depend on a person’s individual bone
structure and anatomical features. The procedure is normally performed in our fully accredited surgical suite with light general anesthesia, and you go home after surgery. The procedure can take between three to six hours, depending on your particular anatomy and if any additional procedures are performed at the same time. A full facelift
procedure includes tightening the cheeks, the jowls (the skin around
the lower jaw that disrupts the youthful sharp jawline), and the neck. It does not address the forehead, brows,
or eyes, and many patients decide to address these regions with a browlift and/or eyelid
lift at the same time as a facelift. Facelift incisions are hidden along border of the ear and the hairline. During the facelift, the underlying
deeper layer of the face tighened, then the overlying skin smoothed.
The procedure results in a well-rested and naturally younger appearance.
Recovery
The head is placed in a dressing which is usually worn for 1-2 days.
Most patients will have swelling and mild bruising that will be present for the first several days, and begins to subside after the first week. Prescription
painkillers are prescribed to relieve pain, however, most patients
experience discomfort from the swelling rather than true pain. Although dramatic changes are noted within the first week, healing will continue for several weeks and you will continue to see more refinement in the shape of your face. Coverup make-up can be used after the first week, and is beneficial if you happen to have visible bruising. The majority of patients are socially presentable after seven to ten days, and work can be resumed. Complete recovery
takes up to six weeks depending on your activity level and your individual
healing process. Smokers must quit smoking several weeks before deciding
to undergo a facelift since it is not safe for the healing process.
A good skincare program that is started several weeks before the
surgery can speed up recovery as well.
Price
Ranges
The approximate cost for a full facelift
is $10,500 (does not include forehead, brows, or eyes). This includes
the surgeon’s fee, the surgery center,
anesthesia and supply fees. Please note that these are estimates,
and the exact quote will be given at the time of your consultation.
The
actual cost of your cosmetic surgery procedure is largely dependent
upon your specific case. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS)
publishes information on its website that provides information on the
cost of various procedures. Visit www.plasticsurgery.org.
These fees may not include the cost of anesthesia, operating room facilities,
and other expenses.
