Eyelid surgery, or a blepharoplasty,
can take years off your appearance when a full facelift is not yet
necessary. An upper blepharoplasty often gets rid of the excess skin
of the upper lids, and a lower blepharoplasty can remove the bags and
puffy appearance under your eyes. Either or both procedures help to
make your face refreshed by opening up the appearance of the eyes.
Procedure
A blepharoplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia, depending
on the individual patient. In our office, all patients considering
a blepharoplasty procedure are required to have a dry eye exam completed
prior to surgery. (These can be scheduled with local optometrists
or ophthalmologists.) During a blepharoplasty, excess skin and fat
are removed thus getting rid of the “hooding” of the
upper lids or getting rid of bags under the eyes. The surgery takes
approximately 1-3 hours with full recovery within 3-4 weeks.

Recovery
There is very little post-operative pain associated with an eyelid
lift, but temporary bruising and swelling will occur. Cold compresses
usually keep the swelling down the first 24 hours after surgery,
but there are no bandages covering the eyes so that you can read
or watch TV. Approximately 5-6 days after surgery, the stitches should
dissolve. Makeup can be worn once all incisions are healed after
about a week. If you wear contacts, you should not wear them for
about 1-2 weeks after surgery. The doctor will advise you when it
is safe to begin wearing them again. After two weeks, there is a
noticeable change in the swelling and bruising. Full activities can
be resumed after 2-3 weeks upon the advice of the doctor.
