Breast enlargement, or augmentation mammoplasty,
is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures among women.
Breast augmentation involves the insertion of saline or silicone gel
implants under the breasts. Some women feel more self-confident with
breasts that are proportional with the rest of their body, and others
who have asymmetrical breasts want to balance and enhance their figures.
A preoperative baseline mammogram report within 12 months of surgery
is required for women over the age of 30 in our office.
Procedure
Breast augmentation generally takes 1-2 hours under general anesthesia.
Incisions are typically made along the fold under the breast, and
the implant is placed ideally under the pectoral muscle. The placement
under the muscle reduces the appearance of ripples under the skin
as well as allowing mammograms to be easily read in the future. Breast
implants are made of saline or silicone gel and come in a variety
of shapes and sizes. Silicone breast implants are now FDA-approved and available for breast augmentation surgeries. MemoryGel™ implants have been in use for almost 20 years around the world; after almost two decades of research with surgeons and patients, they are now being used in the United States. MemoryGel™ breast implants, exclusively from Mentor Corporation, feature a cohesive, gelatin-like substance that acts as a solid rather than a liquid. It holds together uniformly while still retaining the natural give of breast tissue. (For more information, visit Mentor’s website at www.mentor4me.com.)

Recovery
The first 24-48 hours after surgery are the most uncomfortable. Pain
medication and muscle relaxants are prescribed to ease any discomfort
or pain. It is extremely important not to do any lifting during the
first 2 weeks following surgery. Bruising and swelling can remain
for several weeks until the implant settles into the body. After
3-5 days, patients should be able to return to work and resume normal
daily activities excluding lifting and aerobic exercise. An athletic
soft cup bra (without underwires) should be worn for the first 4-6
weeks until the scars have healed. Full athletic activities (running,
weightlifting, etc.) may be resumed within 6 weeks with the surgeon’s
approval.
