Ten years ago, it was uncommon for men to entertain the idea of cosmetic surgery. But like so much else that has changed over the past decade, today, plastic surgeons note that up to 30 percent of their clientele are men. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, in 2006, men underwent nearly one million cosmetic surgical procedures. The top three procedures were: liposuction, rhinoplasty, and eyelid surgery.

Men choose plastic surgery for many reasons stemming from all facets of their lives including work life, social life and personal life. A survey conducted by the Toronto Centre for Cosmetic Surgery revealed that 84 percent of men feel that physical appearance can benefit them in achieving professional success.

Statistics also show that career is not the only male motivator when it comes to plastic surgery. While a suit will cover up a stomach at the office, it can still be seen at the gym or at the pool. It is not a coincidence that liposuction is the most common form of plastic surgery in men. Men face frustration in that no matter how many sit-ups, crunches or oblique-targeted exercise they do, they still can not lose their "love" handles. These men too have found that cosmetic surgery can do what a thousand hours at the gym never could.
