Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes deposits of fat in specific areas of the body that are resistant to weight loss and exercise.  The ideal candidate for liposuction is one who is within 5-10 pounds of their desired weight.  The fat cells that are removed will not be replaced in the body, however weight gain will increase the size of the remaining fat cells.  It is extremely important to keep up good eating and exercise habits before, during, and after liposuction in order to maintain the results of surgery.  Liposuction is most common in contouring the neck and chin, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, and knees.  The results of liposuction are not immediate, however, and do not appear overnight.

Procedure
Liposuction is performed with a cannula (a tube and vacuum device) most commonly using the tumescent technique.  A saline solution containing local anesthetic is injected into the body with the cannula to suction localized areas of fat cells.  The most common type of liposuction is the SAL, or suction assisted lipoplasty.  (The UAL, or ultrasonic assisted lipoplasty, is the technique used to remove much larger volumes of fat.)  The incisions used to insert the cannula are small in length and heal quickly.  The procedure takes about 1-2 hours depending on the area of liposuction and is usually performed under general anesthesia.

This revolutionary procedure offers smooth results, with low to minimal patient discomfort. LipoSelection by VASER leaves important tissues such as nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue –relatively undamaged to yield exceptional smooth, shapely results. Only LipoSelection by VASER provides you an experience that is UltraSelective, UltraSmooth, UltraSound!

Recovery
Bruising and swelling are not uncommon in the areas of liposuction.  Temporary fluid drainage often occurs at the incision sites, and swelling is noticeable for the first 1-2 weeks.  Patients often feel more comfortable wearing some type of compression garment until all the swelling has gone down.  Normal activities can be resumed after 5-7 days, and full athletic activities in 4-6 weeks.  The swelling from the infused fluids will continue to decrease over the next several months.  The final result of liposuction may take up to 3-6 months.  It is extremely important to maintain a proper diet and exercise program while recovering in order to fully benefit from liposuction.
