As we begin to age, our faces begin to
look tired and reveal wrinkles that cannot be reversed by skincare.
The aging process due to the effects of gravity, sun exposure, and
stress causes wrinkles around the eyes, the mid-face and chin. A facelift
(technically called a rhytidectomy) can improve the most visible signs
of aging. The ideal candidates for facelifts are typically in their
mid-40’s to 60’s who are not getting desired results from
non-surgical procedures. A facelift can make you look younger and well-rested,
but it will not change your overall appearance.
The
Procedure
The results of a facelift depend on a person’s individual bone
structure and anatomical features. Facelift incisions are made behind
the ear and heal so that they are hidden behind the hairline. The skin
should not appear too tight so that the mouth is immobile. A full facelift
procedure includes tightening the cheeks, the jowls (the skin around
the lower jaw), and the neck. It does not address the forehead, brows,
or eyes; however, and many patients decide to have a browlift and/or eyelid
lift with a full facelift. During the facelift, the underlying
deeper layer of the face is pulled tight, then the overlying skin smoothed.
A small, thin drain may be temporarily placed under the skin behind
the ear to drain any blood that might collect there.

Recovery
The head is placed in a head wrap and is usually worn for 1-2 days.
The stitches around the face are removed after about 5-7 days. Staples
may be placed in the scalp and are removed after 5-7 days. If a
drain has been placed, it will be removed after a few days. Prescription
painkillers are prescribed to relieve discomfort, however, most patients
notice the bruising and swelling more than the pain. Complete recovery
takes up to six weeks depending on your activity level and your individual
healing process. Smokers must quit smoking several weeks before deciding
to undergo a facelift since it is not safe for the healing process.
A good skincare program that is started several weeks before the
surgery can speed up recovery as well.

Ranges
The approximate cost for a full facelift is $11,000 (does not include
forehead, brows, or eyes). This includes the surgeon’s fee, the
surgery center, anesthesia and supply fees. Please note that these
are estimates, and the exact quote will be given at the time of your

The actual cost of your cosmetic surgery
procedure is largely dependent upon your specific case. The American

that provides information on the cost of various procedures. Visit www.plasticsurgery.org.
These fees may not include the cost of anesthesia, operating room facilities,
